About CoCensus

Visitors using CoCensus at NySciCoCensus is an interactive multi-user museum exhibit designed to let visitors collaboratively explore data from the United States Census. Through motion-sensing technologies museum visitors can “play” with census data that represents them on a large data map display. By embodying customized data sets, visitors are given a portal into the complex data in order to encourage reasoning about its spatial, temporal, and quantitative properties. Control is distributed to multiple users simultaneously to allow each person agency in manipulating the representation while potentially promoting collaboration as users work towards a shared goal. Research based around this project seeks to understand how distributed embodied control can facilitate reasoning in this social informal environment.
